Kamichama Karin is another one of Koge Donbo’s manga that now has an anime. She’s also responsible for Pita-Ten and Di Gi Charat. I really liked Pita-Ten a lot, so I was really excited for Kamichama Karin, even though I’ve never read it.
The beginning of the anime features some weirdness from later in the series (I’m assuming), so I just sorta vegged out during that. There were three guys with rings who did a quick transformation to attack some evil vines growing on a pole… And then Karin joined in!
The real story begins with Karin lamenting over her dead pet, Shi. That’s an ironic name… Anyway, she feels really alone. When some dude walks up to her and calls her an idiot, she releases her fury! After he leaves, she feels alone again. Apparently her parents are dead, and her obaa-san is really mean to her for getting bad grades. Her only friend was Shi, but now Shi is dead, too.
With a renewed effort to get better grades, Karin scores… a 30! It looks like she’s doing some kind of physics homework. On the way back to school, she bumps into a girl who she finds super cute. Like she’s got cute girl stuff in her bag (which she spills all over the ground) and she even offers to give Karin some hair ties as a present. They both don’t have parents so Karin and Himeka become friends.
But Karin soon finds out that Himeka’s brother is none other than the guy who called her an idiot, Kazune! He gets another punch for good measure. He’s not really interested in Karin until he spots the ring on her finger. Then he asks to look at it but Karin runs away.
Back at school, Karin becomes an ojou character due to the ring’s power. Like she scores a 100 on her test, plays piano while doing a handstand, and does some crazy awesome chemistry. She should’ve also ended her sentences with “desuwa” and laughed the “oh hohohohoho” laugh. When she wishes it would rain, and it starts raining, she gets a little weirded out.
At home, Himeka visits to give her back the bag that she threw at Kazune. Then they all meet under the rain and Kazune extends his apologies. When Karin visits Shi’s grave again, she’s confronted by a glasses-wearing guy who says he’s been looking for her, and calls her a god! The perverts keep getting weirder and weirder…
So I really liked this first episode. The character designs are really cute and so is the animation. The backgrounds also look incredible. I like the use of color in the backgrounds, especially. The anime is just really enjoyable to look at.
Also, there’s a lot of use of X3 faces and whatnot, so that’s an added plus. Some people might not like it, but I love super deformed expressions.
I’m getting some Pita-Ten vibes from Kamichama Karin. The characters just remind me of the Pita-Ten Characters. Like Kazune reminds me of Ten-chan, and Himeka of Shia. I really want a Koboshi character to show up soon!
Kamichama Karin is turning out to be a pretty fun looking anime. Hopefully it doesn’t end up being a generic magic girl one. If they keep up the pretty animation and the fun storyline, I’ll definitely keep watching. It’s also a plus that the dialogue is really simple and I understood almost everything watching it raw.
If the anime ends up going too slow, I might also wind up getting the manga. It looks like the English translation has gone pretty far into the series, so that’d mean no waiting!
